Prepare Google Translate
- Open the language selector while connected to Wi-Fi and download both needed languages if a download option is available.
- Check the app shows the downloads as complete. Test a typed phrase and a sample photo with Wi-Fi and mobile data turned off.
- Test the actual feature you need; a successful typed translation is not proof that voice or camera mode works offline on your device.
Prepare Apple Translate
- On a supported iPhone, check the Translate app’s language downloads. Apple’s current instructions place these under Settings → Apps → Translate → Languages.
- Download the input and output languages. Try On-Device Mode and check the result before relying on it.
- Apple notes offline translations can be less accurate. Keep sentences short and confirm names or numbers separately.
Save these before boarding
- Hotel name, address and phone number in Chinese from the property itself.
- A message saying you have a reservation and a request to show the total price.
- Food preferences written in simple language. For allergies or other high-consequence information, obtain a checked translation instead of relying on machine translation alone.
- Key phrases as screenshots or printed notes that still work if the app cannot open.
