Chengdu First Day Guide
Landing at Tianfu Airport? It's far from the city. How to get to your hotel, what to eat, and surviving Sichuan spice on day one.
Updated · Editorial approach
When to read
After choosing Chengdu as the arrival city.
What it covers
Rules and services change. For anything important — entry, transport, payment, hotels, telecom — double-check with official sources before you travel.
Arrival point choices
Check the airport code on your flight: Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU) are different airports with different rail connections. Save the correct one with your hotel’s Chinese address.- Confirm the airport and terminal with the airline before departure. Save 天府机场 for Tianfu or 双流机场 for Shuangliu.
- From Tianfu, check Line 18 and the onward route from South Railway Station rather than treating “city center” as a single stop.
- From Shuangliu, check Line 10 for your terminal; the airport also lists Line 19 access at Terminal 2 East. Choose by your hotel’s destination, not just the line number.
- Compare the complete rail journey with a taxi or confirmed hotel pickup. Include terminal walking, transfers and the final walk.
Airport to hotel
For Tianfu, plan the Line 18 journey and the final connection to your hotel. For Shuangliu, check Line 10 or the Terminal 2 East connection to Line 19. A rail-segment time is not a door-to-door estimate.- TFU: the published route uses Line 18 from Tianfu Airport T1/T2 to South Railway Station. Find the onward line, hotel station and final walk before choosing it.
- Check which service stops at your intended station. Use the current operator timetable and displayed fare, including any transfers.
- CTU: the airport lists Line 10 access at both terminals and Line 19 at Terminal 2 East. Follow the current terminal signs and choose the connection that fits your hotel.
- If the last connection cannot be made after bags and terminal walking, compare the official taxi queue or a hotel pickup arranged in advance.
- For taxis, show the full hotel address and confirm payment and the local fare basis before leaving. Check traffic and any extra charges for your actual trip.
Weather and clothing
Check the forecast and any weather warnings for Chengdu on your actual arrival day. Pack for the outdoor parts of the terminal-to-hotel journey, including queues and the final walk.- Check the forecast shortly before departure and again on arrival, including weather warnings that may affect transport.
- Keep a suitable layer and any rain protection in your carry-on so you can reach them before opening your suitcase.
- Choose shoes you can walk in with luggage. Check whether the hotel route includes uncovered sections.
- If weather disrupts the route, ask the operator or hotel about current options rather than relying on a seasonal average.
First evening plan
Check in, eat somewhere nearby, charge your devices and save tomorrow’s first route. Choose a meal by its current opening time, menu and your dietary needs.- Check in and put your bags down before adding another destination.
- Ask the hotel about nearby places currently serving food. Check the menu, price and payment method before ordering.
- Charge your phone, power bank, and everything else. Tomorrow you'll need them all day for navigation and payment.
- Save tomorrow’s first destination and check the complete route before sleeping.
