PayPal in China: Weixin Pay Payments for US Travelers
PayPal confirmed a US-user launch in August 2026. Check PayPal Balance funding, supported merchant QR codes and what to prepare before relying on it.
Quick answer
PayPal confirmed availability for US users on August 11, 2026, following the earlier partnership announcement. Eligible in-store purchases at Weixin Pay merchants use PayPal Balance. The current PayPal World FAQ says linked cards and other funding sources cannot directly fund these transactions.

Before departure
- Update the PayPal app, sign in and check that the in-store payment experience is available to your account.
- Check your PayPal Balance and how you will fund it before you need to buy something. A linked card alone is not enough for this flow.
- Follow PayPal’s location-services instructions and review the terms displayed in your app.
At the checkout
- Use the supported scan-to-pay or show-to-pay flow in the PayPal app. Confirm the merchant and amount before approving.
- This is a merchant payment service; do not assume a personal transfer code or metro gate uses the same checkout.
- Check the transaction record and merchant confirmation before repeating an uncertain payment.
Does it replace other preparation?
Keep another way to pay for your hotel and arrival transport. Check any exchange-rate or funding charges displayed for your own transaction; this page does not claim PayPal is cheaper than another wallet. If the feature is missing, complete that first journey with your prepared backup.
Next step
Use the payment preparation checklist to record the method your hotel accepts and a backup route you can pay for if your phone or app is unavailable.
