Pudong or Hongqiao? How to get to your hotel, sort payment on the way, and settle in for your first night in Shanghai.

Rules and services change. For anything important — entry, transport, payment, hotels, telecom — double-check with official sources before you travel.

Arrival point choices

Start with the airport code and terminal on your booking: Pudong is PVG and Hongqiao is SHA. Your hotel’s exact branch matters more than a generic destination called “Shanghai city center”.
  1. Save the flight’s airport code and terminal, then check any change with the airline before departure.
  2. Save the hotel’s Chinese name, street address, district and map pin. Ask the property for its recommended arrival route.
  3. Pudong terminals have Metro Line 2 access. The Maglev runs to Longyang Road, where you need to plan any onward journey.
  4. At Hongqiao, Terminal 1 has Line 10; Terminal 2 has Lines 2 and 10. Check the terminal before choosing a station.
  5. The Airport Link Line connects Pudong T1/T2 and Hongqiao T2. Consider it for that corridor; it is not the same route as a direct metro journey to a central hotel.
  6. If arriving by rail, read the exact station on your ticket. Shanghai Hongqiao railway station and Shanghai railway station are different places.

Airport to hotel

From Pudong, compare Line 2, Maglev plus an onward connection, the Airport Link Line for the Hongqiao corridor, or a taxi to the door. From Hongqiao, choose by terminal and hotel station. Check the full route after baggage claim, especially at night.
  1. First save the hotel’s exact Chinese address and branch. Use the hotel station and final walk to compare routes, not a single “city center” fare.
  2. PVG → central areas: check Metro Line 2 against your hotel station. If considering Maglev, plan the onward leg from Longyang Road before buying; the fast train segment does not equal a fast door-to-door trip.
  3. PVG → Hongqiao area: compare the Airport Link Line to Hongqiao T2 with your hotel’s onward connection. Check the timetable for your direction on the travel date.
  4. SHA arrivals: Terminal 1 connects to Line 10; Terminal 2 connects to Lines 2 and 10. Match the station and direction to your hotel, and account for lifts, luggage and the final walk.
  5. Late arrival: check every connecting line’s last service after allowing for immigration, baggage and walking. If the connection is uncertain, ask staff about the official taxi queue or use a pickup you have confirmed with the hotel.
  6. For a taxi, follow 出租车 signs, show the address, confirm payment and check the local fare basis, tolls or night charges. Keep the receipt. For ride-hailing, use the app’s actual terminal, level and pickup zone.
  7. Before leaving, check your payment backup, hotel contact and phone power. Save route details offline; do not depend on airport Wi-Fi once outside.

Payment and address checks

Before leaving arrivals, verify three things together: the correct hotel branch, the next transport payment and a way to contact the desk if you arrive late.
  1. Open the Chinese hotel name, full address and map pin; compare them with the booking rather than searching only the English brand name.
  2. If you have not made a real wallet purchase yet, treat setup as untested. Keep the payment method you confirmed for the fallback journey.
  3. Ask the hotel about any deposit and late check-in process. Save its reply and contact number offline.
  4. For a train route, save station names and the final exit or walk. For a pickup, save the meeting place and how to contact the driver.
  5. If a payment remains pending, check with the merchant before retrying or changing methods.

First evening plan

Go to the hotel first, finish check-in and give yourself a simple evening nearby. Keep tomorrow’s first destination ready before you stop using the phone.
  1. At the desk, check the booking name and any deposit terms. Keep the receipt or hold information and ask how release or refund is handled.
  2. Choose a nearby meal once you know the hotel location and how you can pay. Keep the first evening flexible if the flight or journey ran late.
  3. Charge your phone and save the route back to this exact hotel branch.
  4. Before sleeping, save tomorrow’s first destination, opening arrangements and route. Check anything that needs a booking directly with the venue.
